Pools are popular for sports and entertainment, but they can sometimes cause unexpected health issues. One such issue is water getting trapped in the ear, which can lead to discomfort, both physically and psychologically, due to blockage.
Many people have experienced water getting into their ears at some point. Typically, earwax helps expel the water naturally. However, if pool water remains in the ear for several days, it can cause discomfort and even lead to infections, potentially resulting in hearing difficulties.
Earwax acts as a natural barrier against external elements. However, excessive cleaning with cotton swabs can remove this protection. Additionally, some individuals have structural differences in their ear canals, leading to greater earwax buildup. When earwax absorbs water, it can expand and cause blockages.
You may have pool water trapped in your ear if you experience:
Water drainage from the ear
Itching in the ear canal
A slight pressure sensation
Feeling of blockage and difficulty hearing
Muffled sounds
If the blockage persists and is left untreated, symptoms such as fever, redness, pain, excessive ear drainage, and pain spreading to the head, face, or neck may develop.
If you suspect water in your ear, avoid inserting fingers or cotton swabs, as they can push the water deeper. Instead, try these methods:
Use Steam: Taking a long, hot shower may help evaporate the trapped water.
Tilt Your Head: Lean your head to the affected side to encourage drainage.
Chew Gum: Jaw movements can help dislodge trapped water.
Use Hydrogen Peroxide or Boric Acid Drops: These ear drops can help dissolve earwax and facilitate water removal.
Gently Tug Your Earlobe: Lightly pulling and shaking your earlobe while tilting your head may help release the water.
Use a Hairdryer: Hold a blow dryer about 17 cm away from your ear to help evaporate the trapped water.
While water trapped in the ear is usually not serious, prolonged retention can lead to infections. Using the methods above can help remove the water, but if the problem persists, consult a healthcare professional.
