NPSH Value (Net Positive Suction Head)
This term, abbreviated from “Net Positive Suction Head,” is a critical parameter that impacts pump performance. The NPSH value defines the minimum suction pressure required for a pump to operate efficiently without experiencing cavitation (avoiding flow or pressure drops and physical damage). It is particularly used to determine the positive pressure (in meters of water column, mWC) at the pump suction inlet to ensure safe operation in systems with underground suction.
For centrifugal pumps to operate without cavitation, a minimum pressure must be maintained at the pump inlet. This pressure prevents the liquid from vaporizing, ensuring the fluid remains in a liquid state and maintaining optimal pump performance. NPSH is a vital factor to consider during system design and pump selection.
